Soldiers stood at attention, and the officer seemed to look into the horses’ teeth. There was always something to be found. Whether his boots weren’t polished to a shine or his clothes were dirty, whether his face wasn’t powdered enough or his wig curls weren’t stiff enough.
No wonder the Prussian soldier was more afraid of his commander than of the enemy.
